What is a subscription licensing program?
A subscription licensing program gives you the right to run a selection of products, and any upgrades or downgrades of those products, for a designated term. Microsoft subscription agreements are:
Campus Agreement
The Campus Agreement is designed for academic institutions looking for a simple, flexible program that enables you to standardize your software across your organization, keep your school's technology up to speed and place software orders annually and as needed throughout the year. Software Assurance is included, and the Student Option licenses all students to use products on their personal computers.
School Agreement
The School Agreement if for a K-12 school, district, or preschool looking for a simple, flexible subscription licensing agreement that allows you to place software orders annually and as needed throughout the year. Software Assurance is included. This option also allow institutions to license a specified number of students to use products on their personal computers.
What is a transactional licensing program?
With transactional Volume Licensing programs, you acquire perpetual software licenses meaning your institution has a perpetual license while eliminating the costs and packaging of retail software.
Open License for Academic
For academic institutions of any size that want easy, one-time transactions and volume-based pricing on Microsoft software licenses. Also, take advantage of Software Assurance, which allows you to receive product upgrades that are released during the agreement term. Software Assurance is available at a low cost, but you must purchase five licenses to enter the agreement. (Note: Student licensing is not currently available.)
Select License for Academic
Select License for Academic is a three-year agreement (with the option to renew for one or three additional years) is for medium-to-large institutions with more than 250 computers and the ability to forecast license acquisitions up to three years. Software Assurance is optional. (Note: Student licenses are available through a Student Select License.)
Select Plus for Academic
Select Plus for Academic is a non-expiring agreement that offers new features like single customer ID and options to add more value with optional Software Assurance, online services, and Microsoft financing. The Campus and School Agreements (CASAs) remain the optimal way to standardize the desktop environment, and Select Plus is a great way to consolidate purchases across departments to take advantage of volume pricing and improved asset management. (Note: Student licenses are available through a Student Select Plus License.)
